John Ruddy Named “2017 Lifetime Achievement Award” Recipient

Well-known philanthropist and Executive Chairman of Trinity Development Group Inc. John Ruddy will be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2017 Best Ottawa Business Awards (The BOBs) presented by the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce and the Ottawa Business Journal.

“We are delighted to honour John Ruddy not only for his outstanding business achievements, but also for his generous philanthropic work” said Ian Faris, President and CEO, Ottawa Chamber of Commerce. “Mr. Ruddy’s visionary leadership especially on the revitalization of Lansdowne Park, and the re-establishment of CFL football in Ottawa, has created a new legacy for Ottawa, the benefits of which will be felt for years to come.”

After studying architecture at Carleton, Mr. Ruddy worked in real estate in Toronto for a few years before returning to his hometown to launch Trinity in 1992. Mr. Ruddy spotted the trend toward larger retail outlets early on, putting his company at the forefront of the industry’s shift away from malls and into big-box stores. Under his leadership, Trinity has gone on to develop more than 25 million square feet in communities across Canada, employing industry-leading designs and creative mixed-used strategies.

Mr. Ruddy is a prominent and active philanthropist, serving as Honorary Chair at the Royal Ottawa Hospital Campaign for Mental Health, and spearheading their $25 million campaign to fund research, care and advocacy. He has also established the Trinity Development Foundation, providing support at the community level for youth education and sports, seniors, health and the arts. His passion for sports led him to be the champion and lead donor for the revival of the football program at Carleton University after a 15-year absence.

He is a majority shareholder of Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG), which owns the CFL franchise Ottawa Redblacks, the Ottawa Fury Soccer Club, and the OHL Ottawa 67’s. Originally founded to re-establish CFL football in the nation’s capital, OSEG is also responsible for the revitalization of 48-acre Lansdwone Park-a redevelopment that exemplifies Trinity’s ambitions and forward-thinking approaches to vertical mixed-use developments.

The Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Mr. Ruddy at the Best Ottawa Business Awards (The BOBs) Gala on November 15, 2017 at the Westin Ottawa.

The BOBs will also celebrate the city’s top business performers in more than a half-dozen categories and recognize the city’s 2017 CEO of the Year, who will be announced next week.

Mr. Ruddy will take his place at the Plaza of Honour outside the World Exchange Plaza in the new year, where his name will join past recipients including Michael Potter, Shirley Westeinde, Roger Greenberg and John Kelly.
